We are a passionate team exploring diverse functions of enzymes to unlock new frontiers in synthetic chemistry. Together, we reimagine what is possible.

There is a growing need for sustainable ways to create and transform chemical products, from simple molecules to complex polymers. Addressing this challenge calls for innovative methods that reduce environmental impact.

Enzymes have emerged as powerful tools to reshape the chemical landscape by expanding the repertoire of synthetic strategies available to chemists. At the Reisenbauer Lab, we explore novel enzymatic transformations with distinct reactivity and selectivity to develop more sustainable approaches for accessing complex molecules and versatile building blocks. Our research combines the precision and adaptability of biocatalysts with insights from classical organic chemistry. We aim to identify and engineer enzymes that can unlock new reaction pathways. To accelerate these efforts, we integrate emerging tools from machine learning to guide protein engineering and apply generative AI approaches to explore novel enzyme scaffolds.

Through this multidisciplinary strategy, we seek to contribute to the development of more efficient and environmentally responsible methods in chemical synthesis.

Our Research

Our Focus Areas

Driven by curiosity and a spirit of innovation, we explore diverse scientific frontiers to uncover new insights and foster collaboration that drives discoveries.

About Us

We are a newly established research group at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA), just outside Vienna, a city consistently ranked among the most livable in the world.

ISTA provides a vibrant, interdisciplinary environment. As our group grows, you will have opportunities to collaborate with experts across fields: from machine learning and protein design to synthetic chemistry and structural biology. Regular seminars, workshops, and joint projects make ISTA an inspiring place for anyone interested in chemistry and biology.

Facilities

Our research focuses on biocatalysis: exploring and engineering enzymes to unlock new reactivity and sustainable chemical transformations. As part of ISTA’s rapidly expanding research community, we have access to state-of-the-art infrastructure, including:

  • Advanced facilities for protein expression, purification, and characterization

  • High-throughput experimentation and automated analytics platforms

  • Computational resources for data analysis, enzyme modeling, and reaction design

  • Collaborative access to cutting-edge facilities such as cryo-EM, mass spectrometry, NMR, and structural biology
